15’Th Toyota recall includes some Pontiacs! image

Yes, there were some Pontiacs that were built by Toyota at the joint venture with General Motors Co. in California.

The joint venture between the two car-makers, called New United Motor Manufacturing Inc., ended due to GM’s bankruptcy last year.
And looks like those Pontiacs are with trouble. More exactly GM will recall a number of 161,754 Pontiac Vibe vehicles.

“All of it sort of rests back with Toyota, except that it’s badged as a Pontiac,” Adler said. “It’s Toyota’s recall.”
“We are not closing our investigation at this point in order to ensure we have identified all the potential causes of this safety defect in the affected vehicles,” the Transportation Department said in a statement.

According to Reuters, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on August 18 intensified a probe into reports of stalling in the vehicles from the 2005 through 2007 model years, upgrading a preliminary investigation opened in November 2009.

“The engine can stall at any speed without warning and not restart,” NHTSA said in a report on its website.

GM discontinued the Pontiac brand last year and Vibe owners also will receive a recall notice starting in mid-September and one when the module can be replaced, GM spokesman Alan Adler said.
