If you thought before that models like the Lamborghini Sesto Elemento, the Ferrari 458 Italia or the Bugatti Veyron are very expensive, think again, because otherwise you’re in for a shock. First of all grab a chair because after you previously read the news about the 1960 Ferrari California being sold at Pebble Beach auction for a whopping 11 million USD, you should know that a 1968 Ford GT40 race car has just become the most expensive ever American supercar after fetching the same amount during the RM Auction in Monterey, California.

According to RM Auctions, the race car in question, the 1968 Ford GT40, has started a feverish bidding war and after the final bid reached 11 million USD, the crowd erupted in applause. The same source says that this Ford GT40 was so desirable that the company didn’t release a price estimate ahead of the auction. Other expensive and rare cars sold at the RM Auction in Monterey, California, were a 1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder (8.58m USD), a 1955 Ferrari 410 S (8.25m USD), a 1956 Ferrari 250 GT LWB Berlinetta “Tour de France” (6.71m USD), a 1938 Horch 853A Special Roadster (5.17m USD) and a 1955 Aston Martin DB3S (3.69m USD).
