The hybrid-electric version of the A8 sedan which is scheduled to hit the European dealerships next year won’t arrive in the over-seas auto market even if Audi boosted the production of the model. According to the German automaker, the 2012 A8 diesel will be launched in the United States, along with diesel versions of the Q7 crossover and the A3 hatchback.
The new “eco-friendly” A8 will be powered by a 2.0 liter turbocharged TFSI unit and a 40 kW electric motor, delivering a total of 245 horsepower and allowing the large sedan to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.7 seconds, with a 235 km/h (146 mph) top speed.
According to the Audi Group, the new A8 hybrid will be officially unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September and will go on sale sometimes next year.
Audi’s A8 US lineup features a 4.2 liter V8 unit, which is delivering 372 horsepower and has a combined fuel consumption of 21 mpg, and a 6.3 liter W12 which burns 16 mpg.
