2012 Safest Cars list

Every year, car companies constantly work to innovate and make their cars better and safer for the driver. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety on Wednesday said it has awarded Top Safety Picks to a record 115 vehicles for model year 2012.

The ratings, which cover all four of the most common types of crashes, aim to help consumers pick vehicles that offer the highest levels of crash protection.

Every major carmaker has at least one vehicle on the top-picks list and Toyota has the most with 15, including its Lexus luxury and Scion small-car brands. Subaru remains the only automaker with a full line of Top Safety Pick vehicles.

In all, 69 cars, 38 SUVs, 5 minivans, and 3 pickups were selected as providing the best protection for drivers and passengers in front, side, rollover and rear-end crashes based on the Institute’s evaluations.
