BMW, the world’s largest premium carmaker has just officially unveiled the new BMW M3 sedan. At 431bhp, this is the most powerful M3 ever made.
… And while the engine generates only 16 hp more compared to the old V8 BMW M3, the 2979cmc twin-turbo straight-six engine based on the N55 model offers 406lb ft. That’s a massive increase in terms of torque. +111lb ft.
One more thing is to be noticed: this new engine, (codenamed S55 B30) is the smallest unit used on a M3 vehicle after the 2.3-liter four-cylinder powerplant that was used on 1991.
The Germans are announcing impressive figures in terms speed and acceleration – only 4.1 seconds to 100km/h when equipped with the seven-speed M Double-clutch Transmission with Drivelogic (two-tenths quicker than the 507 hp C63 AMG Edition 507 ), and a limited top speed of 155mph. However, adding the M Driver’s package the new M3 will hit 174 mph.
Moreover, BMW says the M3 is more economical, by almost 25 percent (giving 32.0mpg) and will emit only 194g of CO2 for every km. Again, we’re not talking here about 5 or 10 percent, but 25% – that’s huge.
New for 2014 are the “Smokey Burnout” function and a flap in the exhaust pipe will make the car sound differently depending on the driving mode.
Six-speed manual is standard (from Getrag), so good news for the M fans. BMW decided to go ahead with manuals, and this time the gearbox features an auto-blip function on downshifts.
Outside the new sporty sedan looks like a proper M car and the front and rear fascia are more aggressive than even before. Forged 18 inch V-Spoke alloy wheels are standard (with 255/40 front and 275/40 rear tires) along with specially designed M sport brakes. In addition, you can add carbon-ceramic stoppers and 19-inch wheels.
Carbon fiber, is everywhere – interior, exterior … everywhere. For the first time there’s a carbon fiber roof for the 4-door sedan, which will save about 6 kg. Talking about weight reduction the new M car comes with aluminium made front wings, aluminium suspension control arms and magnesium sump. BMW says it was able to cut 80kg even if the new car is 3.6 inches longer (91,4 mm), 2.8 inches wider (71,2mm) and 0.9 inches higher (22.8mm). Now, it has only 3,351 pounds (1,519 kg).
The steering is electro-mechanical with Servotronic (can adapted on the basis of three available modes as needed) and the M differential was revised to offer up to 100 percent lock. The result is better traction and vehicle handling because understeer is effectively prevented when cornering.
The Adaptive M suspension is also available as an optional. The driver can adjust the electronically controlled shock absorbers at the touch of a button. Three different modes can be activated depending on driving conditions: COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT+.
Buyers will be able to choose between 8 different colors: Alpine White, Mineral Grey Metallic, Black Sapphire Metallic, Sakhir Orange Metallic, Silverstone Metallic, Austin Yellow Metallic, Mineral White Metallic and Yas Marina Blue Metallic.
The new M3 and M4 coupe will go public during the 2014 Detroit Motor Show in January.
