2014 Geneva Motor Show LIVE: Rinspeed XchangE concept image

The usual concept coming each Geneva motor show from Rinspeed sees the Swiss going the Tesla way, with a proposal for the future autonomous car based on the Model S electric car.

While the loud mouthed Tesla CEO – billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk – has been rather reluctant on jumping the autonomous vehicle band wagon – saying its Tesla models would come with autonomous aids limited at being the car equivalent of the airline planes auto pilot, Rinspeed jumps the gun here.

The XchangE concept is fully autonomous and boasts as its primary source of attraction the specially designed cabin that features a wide variety of seating positions. Besides that, in a true concept way – though it stands firmly entrenched in today’s technology, the infotainment system was created by Harman, using the HTML5 platform and offering the what used to be the driver and front passenger access to a 1.2 meter-wide display strip housed in front of the movable steering wheel support. In the back sits a gesture-controlled 32-inch 4K monitor.

While the powertrain has not been detailed, it’s safe to assume that this time the one actually powering the Model S is for the moment future proof – the battery electric vehicle has two engine options – one with a 60 kWh battery pack and 362 hp (270 kW) / 440 Nm electric motor and one with a 85 kWh battery pack and 416 hp (310 kW) and 600 Nm rear mounted motor.
