This year Volkswagen decided a facelift is in order for its small class Polo model, which now made its public debut during the 2014 Geneva auto show.
And, because the Polo line-up is actually an extensive family, almost all the members – from CrossPolo to the BlueGT – were enhanced in time for the Geneva gathering. For sure, in the usual Volkswagen tradition the exterior and interior revisions are not really worthy of huge attention, but we do notice that some of the upper level variants have LED lights for the main beam.
The big changes come under the hood, where Volkswagen updated almost all powertrains – from the 3-cylinder 1.2-liter TSI offered with 90 hp (66 kW) and 110 hp (80 kW) to the GTI, which now has 189 bhp (141 kW), up 12 bhp (9 kW) from the outgoing model.
Just below the GTI model for those who fret having such a big stable sits the Blue GT model, which transforms the usual model by sitting on 17-inch wheels and riding 15 mm closer to the soil. It has an improved 4-cylinder, 1.4-liter direct-injection gasoline engine that now churns 150 hp – ten more than before – while also having an outstanding fuel efficiency – 4.8 liters/100 km.
If you like setting fuel consumption records on the commute from work, then the Polo TDI BlueMotion is for you, thanks to its three-cylinder 1.4-liter with 74 bhp (55 kW) which is rated at just 3.1 liters/100 km (75.8 mpg).
