Audi’s enhanced SQ5 TDI plus crossover has been officially introduced in front of the worldwide audience during the 2015 IAA Frankfurt motor show in Germany.
The model had been previously revealed online at the start of the month and now the public has the chance to see it in the metal during the automotive event – a true representative of and entirely new breed: performance crossovers with diesel engines. The Ingolstadt-based automaker was already playing the ball in the field with the SQ5 TDI performance model and the plus model has been added as a way of further spicing up the recipe. That’s because the “plus” comes with a power increase – from 313 PS (230 kW) and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) to 340 PS (250 kW) and 700 Nm (517 lb-ft), with the engine being the same twin-turbo 3.0-liter TDI, modified to deliver increased injector pressure.
The model presented at IAA is a limited production series that is adorned in “macaw blue” paint at the exterior and comes with black Nappa leather with body-colored stitching in the cabin. The standard SQ5 TDI plus will cost 67,700 euros in Germany and to switch to this limited series you’ll need to shell an extra 12,000 euros and also hurry up – just 100 units will be sold.
The twin-turbo TDI engine is mated to an 8-speed tiptronic transmission and the power is channeled to the wheels via the well known Quattro all wheel drive system. This enables the crossover to jump to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.1 seconds and hit an electronically limited maximum speed of 155 mph (250 km/h). Fuel efficiency is still pretty impressive, with an average economy of 6.6 liters / 100 km (35.6 mpg) with emissions of 174 g/km of CO2.
