The new generation of the Volvo XC90 has been officially unveiled as the company has released its full specs, along with a huge image gallery.
The 2015 Volvo XC90 is finally here. The model in question is definitely the most important model in the company’s lineup and also one of the most awaited, considering the technologies added to it and the large marketing campaign with the numerous teasers released over these past few months. The new generation of the mid-size luxury SUV is getting an evolutionary design, with an elegant look and some refined lines. The model is getting the large chromed grille with vertical double slats, flanked by the LED daytime running lights.
The lower part of the front bumper is bringing the fog lights and the profile is showing the chromed window framing, a large rear-side window and, of course, those large 22-inch alloy wheels. The rear end is showing the roof mounted spoiler or the round / rectangle double exhaust tips, depending on the version selected. We should also remember those signature taillights and the dark plastic mouldings on the wheel arches, on the side skirts and on the bumpers, instead of the regular aluminum finish.
The interior design of the new-gen Volvo XC90 has been completely changed and this is now getting a minimalistic configuration with just a few buttons, as most of them have been replaced by the touch screen, which has a pretty generous size. The vehicle is getting the four-zone climate control, the soft leather on the seats, the 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins 1,400-watt audio system, the wood trim, aluminum inserts and several other tweaks, making it the most luxurious cabin ever seen in a car made by Volvo.
The 2015 Volvo XC90 has also been fitted with the diamond cut controls for the volume and start / stop, along with the Apple CarPlay, the voice recognition system, a lot of storage spaces, the HERE navigation system, the Ericsson based cloud solution and a third row of seats which, according to the Swedish based automaker, it can sit people who are up to 1.7 meters tall.
The new generation of the popular SUV is riding on the SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) and it has been fitted with a lot of safety gizmos, which include the blind spot information, the road sign information, the driver alert control, the lane keeping aid, the road edge and barrier detection, automatic braking, pedestrian detection in darkness, queue assist and much more.
As far as the engine lineup goes, the 2015 Volvo XC90 is coming with the range of Drive-E units, all of them with four cylinders, with the D5 twin turbo diesel packing 225 HP (168 kW) and 470 Nm (347 lb-ft) of torque, burning 6L/100km (47 mpg UK / 39.2 mpg US) and the D4 with its 190 HP (142 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque, returning 5L/100km (47 mpg UK / 56.5 mpg US).
Petrol burners include the T6 turbocharged and supercharged with 320 HP (239 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque or the T5 with its 254 HP (189 kW) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque. The T8 plug-in hybrid is getting the 2.0 liter turbocharged and supercharged unit powering the front wheels and the 80 HP (60 kW) electric motor sending power to the rear ones. The total output stands at 400 HP (298 kW) and 640 Nm (472 lb-ft).
The new-gen Volvo XC90 will firstly be sold in a first edition, which will include the cars powered by the T6 or by the D5. These will be coming with the onyx black exterior finish, with Nappa leather seats, charcoal leather wrapped dashboard, walnut inlays and 21-inch 8-spoke Inscription wheels. The new XC90 will start its production in 2015, in Torslanda, Gothenburg, and the first deliveries will be made in May. Over-seas, the model will cost from 48,900 USD, for the T6 AWD, while the T6 First Edition will set you back for 65,900 USD.
