The all new generation of the world’s best selling hybrid, the Prius, has not reached the US market under auspicious conditions as the low gas prices have favored above else crossovers and pickup trucks.
But the Japanese company is not giving up on the idea of swaying people from gas guzzlers and as such the iconic wedge-shaped model has decided it was time to star in the automaker’s latest commercial that will be delivered to the American public during the weekend’s Super Bowl. Unlike the rest of the automotive pack which have already premiered online their Big Game commercials, Toyota has only granted us a teaser trailer – hinting the ad would be directed towards the Generation X with an 80s glam metal twist, all the while focusing on the hybrid’s features including its quirky new design language and increased fuel efficiency. The ad has been dubbed “Heck on Wheels,” and also highlights the better handling brought by the use of the TNGA platform and new safety gimmicks – such as the collision warning system.
The 2016 Toyota Prius has been priced in the US from $24,200 and comes with the well known green powertrain – for this generation a 1.8-liter Atkinson cycle four-cylinder engine is used together with two electric motor/generators, and an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission. The maximum combined output is of 121 horsepower and the EPA estimates point to a fuel economy rating of 54 mpg city / 50 mpg highway / 52 mpg combined. The Eco version comes off even better at 58 mpg city / 53 mpg highway / 56 mpg combined.
