2017 Auto Shanghai: Acura TLX-L prototype image

While this new Acura TLX with a longer wheelbase is dubbed as a prototype, we’re pretty sure the Japanese automaker will move to put it into series production for the Chinese market exactly like this.

Acura introduced the refreshed 2018 TLX in US spec earlier this month at the New York Auto Show and now the midsize luxury sedan has decided to show up in front of the Chinese public at the 2017 Auto Shanghai, with a twist. While it pretty much features the exact same upgrades as the North American brother, it comes with added space inside thanks to the elongated wheelbase. People’s Republic loves long-wheelbase derivatives providing extra rear legroom, so Acura is joining the long list of automakers delivering such specific versions of their models.

The automaker hasn’t said how much bigger the wheelbase is, but it needs a few inches over the standard TLX’s 109.3 inches (2,776 millimeters). The shiny red car is called a prototype, but that’s probably just while the engineers get all details sorted out. Naturally, at least for now the TLX-L will be produced in the near future as a China-exclusive deal, though there have been cases when such elongated models have crossed the pond to the United States.
