Subaru – now the name for the parent as well – announced its readiness to introduce an all-new seven-seat SUV model that would fight with the newly introduced VW Atlas since the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show.
Back then they presented the Viziv-7 concept. For the worldwide audience of the New York Auto Show though, they are back with a further refinement of the idea – the Ascent concept is an almost production-ready concept previewing the namesake production car that should arrive sometime in 2018. The new Ascent – the production version – will only be offered in North America, where Subaru is anyways doing great. Without all the concept panache of the former showcar iteration, the Ascent concept seems ready to go out the factory gate judging by the exterior design.
More important changes need to be operated inside the cabin, where the Ascent concept features touch panels on the doors and an interesting center console with a sky background that is also on the fully digital instrument cluster. The sizes have also been updated – shorter, narrower, and lower than the Viziv-7, measuring 198.8 inches long, 78.3 inches wide, and 72.4 inches tall. Subaru has already announced the Ascent’s production location – Lafayette, Indiana, with availability starting 2018.
