Available since way back in 1984, the subcompact Ibiza is of course Seat’s top selling model ever – 5.4 million units have been delivered over the course of four generations.
The all-new Ibiza is coming live in just a few hours now, so the Spanish unit of Volkswagen AG has taken to the social media channels a for a sneak preview of the new supermini. The model has been long in the making, because it was teased for the first time back in 2014, and many of its fans will shed a tear when finding out the practical ST wagon version has been axed – instead the brand will follow popular demand in offering the Ibiza-based crossover coming live in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
The fifth generation Ibiza will of course be presented in front of the worldwide audience during the Geneva Motor Show in March and use VW Group’s MQB A Zero platform that will also provide the basis for the new VW Polo and Skoda Fabia. Motivation is most likely coming from a family of three- and four-cylinder engines, all of them with turbo – though a naturally-aspirated one liter might become available on certain markets. The Seat Ibiza will not only be produced in Martorell, Spain, but also at the group’s new factory in Algeria where it will share the lines with the Golf, Octavia, and Caddy sometimes later this year.
