The Bavarian automaker has come up with the expected facelift for the i3 city EV, which is – as in recent times – evolutionary, but at least they also introduced the sportier i3s version as well.
The 2018 i3 is coming with subtle upgrades compared to the predecessor – standard full LED headlights, two new exterior shades in Melbourne Red Metallic and Imperial Blue Metallic, as well as a fresher exterior design to deliver a “wider and sportier look,” according to the company. Moving to the i3s, the version gets its own design elements – accent strips on the front fascia, gloss black finish on the roofline. More importantly, it arrives with a sport suspension with increased track width by 40 mm compared to a standard i3. The 20-inch alloy wheels bode well with the rest of the changes.
The i3s is playing it all on the sporty card – the model also has a new Sport mode and a new high-performance, 184-horsepower (137-kilowatt) motor with 199 pound-feet (269 Newton-meters) of torque. It’s a small update of the 170 hp (126 kW) and 184 lb-ft (249 Nm) of torque from the regular i3, with the sprint to 60 mph now taking 6.8 seconds, arriving with “enhanced e-Driving abilities”. The Range extender option remains in place, to supplement the all-electric range of around 97 miles (156 kilometers) to around 180 miles (289 kilometers). The updated i3 models feature inside the new BMW iDrive 6 interface and ConnectedDrive, with enhanced green features.
