The competition from BMW just unveiled the 2017 BMW 5 Series Touring, but apparently Mercedes was keeping an ace up the sleeve – the 2018 Mercedes-AMG E63S Wagon.
Just months ago the folks from Affalterbach treated Mercedes-AMG fans to the new E63 and E 63 S sedan version of the new generation E Series, and now they are going for practicality. The new E63 S Wagon goes for the same credentials as the sedan, an exclusive 4Matic all-wheel drive setup, which you can morph into RWD joy thanks to the Drift Mode. Under the hood is the same biturbo 4.0-liter V8 engine with 603 horsepower (450 kilowatts) and 627 pound feet (850 Newton-meters) of torque hooked to a nine-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission. Standard amenities include dynamic engine mounts, variable torque distribution and an electronically controlled rear limited slip differential.
Because practical means a tad heavier, the E63 S Wagon (T-Modell in Germany) will do the 0-60 mph (0-96 kph) sprint in 3.4 seconds, which is supercar territory. Maximum speed has also gone down a notch – from 186 mph (300 kph) to an electronically limited 180 mph (290 kph). Cargo capacity for this supercar family hauler is 35 cubic feet with the rear seats upright – and the model boasts the exact same details as the sedan counterpart, only juxtaposed on the wagon body style. Getting to see the E63 S Wagon will involve a March trip to the Geneva Motor Show, where it’s on display next to the “tamed” E63 Wagon version, getting 563 hp and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft).
