While Subaru has left the scene of the WRC competition some time ago, it still treats its fans to hot smoking performance models – unlike one traditional rival we’re not going to name (Yes, Lancer).
The Japanese automaker has decided the Subaru WRX STI is in need of an upgrade – so here’s the special edition limited-run WRX STI Type RA coming to satisfy the needs. In case you were wondering, RA stands for “Record Attempt”, but more importantly the model has an entire raft of upgrades to speak about. There’s an increase in power via a new cold air intake, a high flow performance exhaust, reworked pistons and a modified ECU. The turbocharged 2.5-liter engine has been taken to 310 horsepower (231 kilowatts), which is a mere five over the standard WRX STI. But the boxer engine is linked to a reworked six-speed manual gearbox with short throw shifter.
In addition, maneuverability has been enhanced via the uprated suspension system now with Bilstein dampers for both axles and an STI-tuned Vehicle Dynamics Control system. The 19-inch BBS forged alloy wheels shod in 245/35R19 Yokohama Advan Sports tires hide the Brembo brakes with silver calipers and cross-drilled rotors. And there’s even more – a carbon fiber hood and rear wing, as well as no spare wheel to cut the weight – Subaru hasn’t actually detailed the exact fat trim, but the standard model tips the scales at 3,386 pounds (1,535 kilograms).
Design wise, the limited-edition performance sedan has visual flourishes to set it apart in a crowd – exclusive Cherry Blossom Red accents around the front grille and the rear bumper cover, STI under spoiler up front, as well as black badges, side mirror caps, and antenna. The cockpit has received Recaro seats and an individually numbered plaque on the center console to reference the exact number of the 500-examples limited run. Standard features include push-button start and keyless access, red stitching, and Ultrasuede steering wheel with glossy black center spoke insert and “STI” logo.
