Fans of the ubiquitous hot hatchback have been waiting in like forever for VW to deliver the fabled 400-hp version, but since Dieselgate it’s up to aftermarket venues to fulfill the dream.
ABT Sportsline is certainly a well-known and elegant tuner of VW products, so no chance this project is going to be the wild exploration dream of aficionados in the back of a workshop – so you can bet you can use all 400 ponies. ABT says the Golf R’s power increase to 400 hp has been managed only through engine tuning, using their bespoke ABT Engine Control unit that takes the standard Golf’s 310-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder to a complete 400 ponies stance. Torque has also been upgraded to a full 368 pound-feet, and ABT makes sure you can use all this.
They also offer an optional suspension upgrade with new anti-roll bars and springs for a 20mm drop in the front and 25mm in the rear – but you can also spec a height-adjustable suspension kit that lowers the stance by up to 45mm, backed by six-piston brakes. The design alterations include a choice of DR or ER-C wheels with different finishes and sizes up to 20 inches, side skirts and a diffuser at the rear, complete with oh so subtle quad exhaust tips, backed by an upgraded ABT rear muffler.
