Alessandro Del Piero and Patrick Dempsey set up team for 24 Hours of Le Mans image

Former Juventus striker Alessandro Del Piero has set up his own racing team together with American actor Patrick Dempsey.

The team, which is called Dempsey/Del Piero Racing, has submitted an entry for the Le Mans 24 hour race in June and will enter two cars in the American Le Mans Series from March.

The U.S.-based team will have three drivers in the 24-hour race – Patrick Dempsey and American veterans Joe Foster and Michael Avenatti. Drivers for the ALMS series have not been announced, but Del Piero is not expected to have a driving role. Alessandro Del Piero currently plays for Sydney FC in the Australian league. The Italian said he expects the team to be competitive, with the central focus being to win world championships. A champion couldn’t have possibly aimed for less, could he?

As for Patrick Dempsey, he’s no stranger to Le Mans. In 2009, he raced a Ferrari F430 GT in the world’s most famous 24-hour race and finished ninth in the GT2 class. Dempsey is best known for his role as Dr. Derek Shepherd on Grey’s Anatomy. A racing enthusiast, he s also known to have a collection of sports and collector cars.
