The upcoming Alfa Romeo Spider will be based on the same platform as the new Mazda MX-5 and it will be named the Duetto.
After announcing a collaboration for developing the new roadster based on the next generation of the Mazda MX-5 Miata platform, Mazda and Fiat are once again entering our news, this time with new details on the upcoming vehicle. According to the guys at blog.caranddriver.com, the model will be named the Duetto and it will use lightweight aluminum materials. Alfa Romeo is targeting a total weight below 2,300 pounds or 1,043 kg for the Duetto and the model should make its debut sometimes in 2014.
Our source is also saying that the Alfa Romeo Duetto will use a 1.8 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which will produce around 250 horsepower and it will be mated to a standard six-speed manual transmission but an optional dual clutch seven-speed transmission, with paddle shifters, will be available as well. The Alfa Romeo Duetto is rumored to be inspired by the Pininfarina Alfa Romeo 2uettottanta Concept which was officially presented to the public at the Geneva Motor Show. The final production version of the model will arrive in 2015, after making its debut sometimes in 2014.
