The German based automaker Audi has recently announced its plans to introduce a new SUV, larger than the Q7, which will be named the Q8.
Rumors on Audi developing the Q8 have been around ever since 2012 but now these rumors are close to becoming a reality as the carmaker is planning to develop such an SUV. The announcement has been made by the company’s boss, Wolfgang Durheimer, recently, who admitted that the carmaker’s main priority is SUVs.
“SUVs are our biggest priority and an SUV bigger than the Q7 is one we could do. It would fit in our offerings. Bentley has shown what can be done with a car of this size. I pushed for the Bentley SUV and I’m pushing for Audi to make something in this segment also. I could see Bentley and Audi both making SUVs, and Lamborghini also; in my job I’m trying to encourage the Lamborghini SUV project to progress”, told Wolfgang Durheimer to Autocar.
According to the carmaker, the Audi Q8 will become a direct rival for the 2014 Range Rover Sport and it will adopt a coupe-like roofline, being envisioned as an SUV version of the A8. The model will ride on the MLB platform, which will underpin models like the Audi Q7, the VW Touareg or the Porsche Cayenne. Additional details on the model remain unknown for the moment.
