Nobody really likes waiting for the green light – and unfortunately there are so few traffic lights fitted with timers, telling you how much you have to wait.
But it turns out in the near future the Audi models will make your life easier – at least in the US – thanks to the introduction of the new traffic light information system. This new feature allows the vehicle to alert drivers about how much they have to wait until the light turns green. The new amenity will be arriving on the 2017 Audi A4, A4 Allroad, and Q7 quite soon – this fall. The car’s infotainment system makes use of the built-in LTE data connection to download information about the status of traffic lights, and then deploys a countdown timer on the instrument cluster or head-up display to indicate when the color switch occurs. So, there’s no need to guess when lights change while waiting in line in a busy intersection.
The new traffic-light countdown feature is of course a convenience thing for drivers, but Audi has larger plans in motion here. “In the future we could envision this technology integrated into vehicle navigation, start / stop functionality, and it can even be used to help improve traffic flow in municipalities,” Pom Galhotra, Audi general manager for connected vehicles, said in a statement. “These improvements could lead to better overall efficiency and shorter commuting times.” The main issue is the feature is only available for U.S. cities with “smart” traffic lights, which haven’t even been revealed yet.
