Audi, Volkswagen Group’s premium brand plans to build vehicles in America as soon as 2015 – Audi’s head of sales Peter Schwarzenbauer said.
“We scouted around North America, and are putting together facts and figures to try and find out the best option for us,” Mr Schwarzenbauer told the Financial Times at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
Some inautonews sources say Audi representatives have been in Chattanooga for months evaluating the possibilities.
Audi’s plans are bold. It wants to surpass BMW as the world’s largest luxury car maker by 2015. Stadler said “the next pillar of the market we have to conquer is the United States… we see opportunities in the SUV and sedan segments”
Last week the premium automaker announced record U.S. sales of 117,561 vehicles sold in 2011, eclipsing the prior record of 101,629 vehicles sold in 2010.
In December, the Germans sold 12,655 vehicles – a 20% increase over the same period last year.
The compact A4 was the best-selling Audi in December and for all of 2011. the new-design A6 mid-size sedan enjoyed the biggest percentage gain: Up 124% in December.
