The Ingolstadt-based automaker has unveiled a very interesting custom A8 L that was elongated even further in a bid to gain another set of doors.
This is the Audi A8 L extended, a limousine that could easily compete with the Mercedes Maybach Pullman thanks to its massive overall length of 20.9 ft. (6.36 meters) and preposterous wheelbase coming in at 13.8 ft. (4.22 meters). The company didn’t know what to call it so they simply named it an “exceptionally long luxury sedan” that needed almost one year of research and development in order to iron out all the issues. We have now a six-door, six-seat A8 L that has been extended to make all the necessary accommodations for those six lucky guests. The model has been adorned with a moonlight blue metallic shade on the body and features a custom body from the A-pillar backwards. This is a built-to-order model that has extruded aluminum sections to accommodate the extended side sills and center tunnel. A separate double rear bulkhead was used to isolate the passenger area from the trunk compartment.
Audi also had to make sure torsional and flexural rigidity were just as good as the ones of the A8 L so they used more aluminum profiled tubes and cross-braces in the elongated roof which itself is a work of flawless technical perfection – it includes a 7.9-ft. (2.4-meter) glass panel. Inside the impressive cabin we have all seats facing the direction of travel and even packing sun blinds. The seats are adorned in “extra-supple” Valcona leather with a velvet beige color theme and rows two and three are also individual with electric adjustment. The third row seats are also separated via a full-length center console with screen and cool box.
Performance wise, the A8 l extended has a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine delivering a not so impressive 310 horsepower (228 kilowatts) and a maximum torque of 324.5 pound-feet (440 Newton meters). The 62 mph (100 km/h) sprint is handled in 7.1 seconds and the top speed will be capped at 155 mph (250 km/h). Total weight stands at 5,330 pounds (2,418 kilograms), and the Audi A8 L extended has also been equipped with the all-wheel-drive quattro system. No word on the client it was intended to perspired from Audi but a report at the beginning of the year tipped the Norwegian royal family had asked for a six-door, elongated A8 L for King Harald’s 25th anniversary as monarch.
