The Ingolstadt-based automaker is looking to solidify its full-scale sedan range – following the introduction of the flagship A8 limousine it’s now high time customers took a look at the new generation A7 Sportback, which is set for the official introduction on October 19.
The second generation is coming in a hot weather climate already, because it’s going to fight an uphill battle against powerful competitors such as the Porsche Panamera, BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe, and the upcoming new generation Mercedes-Benz CLS. While the teaser doesn’t reveal too much – except for the rumored retractable rear spoiler – in Audi’s tradition there isn’t much to discuss in terms of design. The exterior will take close cues from the A8 lines at the front, and so we only have to think about the rear – though spy shots have revealed the continuation of the A8’s full-width taillight design theme.
Of course, the Audi A7 Sportback is arriving as a five-door hatchback – or rather a fastback – making it both a stylish and more practical choice than the upcoming new generation A6 classic sedan. The A7 will certainly add a few centimeters to assure customers in the back sit better than before, but the Sportback isn’t going to be heavier as it makes the transition to the new MLB Evo platform. Powertrain options should be a clever mix between what’s on offer for the A6 and some of the engine options from the A8, though a huge W12 won’t be on the list, most likely.
