The German based automaker Audi is planning to introduce a new sports car into its lineup in the form of a “baby” R8, named the R4, which will rival with the new Jaguar C-X16 and will be placed between the TT and its larger brother the R8.
According to autoexpressnews.com, the new Audi R4 will hit the market as a convertible and will be powered by the company’s 2.5 liter five-cylinder turbo engine which will be developing around 400 BHP, being fitted with the Quattro all-wheel drive system and with a possible hybrid being offered later on.
Don’t get too excited about the Jaguar C-X16’s rival because the R4 is expected to take at least three years to hit the market but the main question for now is whether the vehicle will sit on a new mid-engined platform, debuted by the VW BlueSport previewed at the 2009 Detroit Motor Show, or a cut-down version of the R8’s aluminum spaceframe, which could also underpin a new entry-level Porsche.
“If the go-ahead was given today, it would take around three years to put it into production. […] We’ve made platform sharing work in the past with cars such as the Q7, but we have to decide if it’s right for this car”, as an Audi insider told autoexpressnews.com.
Whatever the platform will be and whatever engines the vehicle will offer, one thing is for sure: the R4 will outsell Porsche’s 911. The Audi R4 is expected to be priced around 50k GBP.
