With anticipation of enthusiasts around the world at fever pitch, today BMW’s M GmbH division unveiled the newest member of its intimate product family. It’s here, it’s live, it’s great. The new BMW 1 Series M Coupe.
For the first time, the coveted M badge has been granted to the popular BMW 1 Series in the form of the all-new BMW 1 Series M Coupe.
The reality on the new BMW 1 Series M: twin-turbo straight-6 rated at 335 hp at 5,900 rpm making 332 pound-feet of torque at 1,500 rpm (with a short-lived 369-lb-ft hit a
vailable on the overboost). Redline is tagged at the 7,000-rpm mark. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph, with 0-60-mph acceleration in 4.7 seconds.
Other official figures for the 1-series M Coupe are 29.4mpg and 224g/km, which easily bests a manual-equipped M3’s 22.8mpg and 290g/km CO2.
Like its big brother M3 Coupe sibling, the 1 Series M Coupe gets an aluminum suspension. It also has an M exhaust system with four “signature” exhaust pipes.
Consider the 1 Series M Coupe’s dimensions. Measuring 172.4 inches long, the car is just 1.3-inches longer than a 1988 M3. Of course, the1 Series M Coupe is wider by 4.8 inches, has a longer wheelbase by 3 inches, and is heavier by several hundred pounds (3296 compared to the 1988 M3’s 2800-pound curb weight). Still, compared to the current 3700-pound M3 coupe, the 1 M is a lightweight.
The 2011 BMW 1 Series M Coupe will be available in limited quantities and with a limited range of options at BMW Centers in Spring, 2011. Final pricing, packages, and options will be announced closer to the on-sale date.
