It’s only a prototype for the moment but these technologies will make their way onto future production vehicles.
After we have seen a time has come to talk about another prototype signed by the Bavarian based automaker, a 1-Series with direct water injection. The model in question has been introduced during the same BMW Group Innovation Days 2015 and the water supply for the water injection cooling is kept topped by the recovery of condensed water from the AC system.
The prototype is making use of a 1.5 liter turbocharged 3-cylinder petrol engine which is capable of putting down a total output of 215 HP and the water is injected in the intake manifold where it is evaporating, extracting energy from the surroundings and reducing the temperature in the engine by approximately 25 degrees Celsius. This leads to lower fuel emissions and 10 percent higher power figures. The cooling effect of water injection is reducing temperatures just enough to avoid the need of injection additional fuel when the vehicle is driven fast.
