According to BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer, the German automaker will introduce a new NEV(New Energy Vehicle) 5 Series in China next month.
The new plugin hybrid – NEV will be based on the long wheelbase version of the BMW 5 Series (the LWB), which is currently on sale in China.
“This model will be our e-car from China for China – a long version of the BMW 5 Series as a plug-in hybrid. This car will benefit from the strength and the excellent reputation of the BMW brand.” Reithofer said.
The New Energy Vehicle will likely use a version of the hybrid system first seen in the ActiveHybrid 5 Concept. That show car used a six-cylinder gas engine mated to an electric motor, with the New Energy Vehicle adding plug-in capabilities.
BMW is already testing an electric version of the Mini in Beijing and Shenzen. It showed its Active E test car at the Geneva auto show earlier this month.
The more exciting news is that there are rumors that the M5 will also debut at the show…
