The German automaker is getting its green 5 Series a little easier to use, with the addition of an optional wireless charging system for the 2018 model year 530e iPerformance plug-in hybrid.
While the normal recharging system for the 530e is rated at 3.7 kW, getting the 9.2 kWh battery to full charge in less than three hours via the wall box, the new option is not far behind at 3.2 kW – and the wireless system will also get integration with the 530e’s on-board infotainment system to show the charger’s alignment directly on the screen. Because of safety reasons, the wall electric socket is usually limited in terms of charging power so charging actually takes around five hours – the 3.2 kW wireless system eschews that and needs a bit more than three hours to replenish the battery. “BMW Wireless Charging for the high-voltage battery will be made available as an option for the BMW 530e iPerformance from 2018. This technology allows energy transfer to take place without the use of cables,” comments the company.
For now in concept form, the system comes with a base plate with integrated primary coil that can even reside out in the open as well as a secondary coil fitted to the underside of the vehicle. An alternating magnetic field is generated between the two, thus delivering power without cables. BMW even offers a Digital Charging Service that takes care of charging time management taking into account tariffs and solar energy, among others.
