[Video] BMW i8 reimagined as the autonomous Rinspeed Etos concept [gallery] image

The well known Swiss automobile manufacturer and tuning designer is back with the usual – annual concept – though this time around it has modified its schedule a little bit.

We were used to Rinspeed presenting its concepts in time for the annual Geneva Motor Show but since the company has always been ahead of its time it has decided to modify its appearances to coincide with the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas – an event that has more to do with the automotive world each passing year. So, ahead of its official public debut during the 2016 CES, Rinspeed has decided to present online the all new Etos concept. The prototype has been based off the high-performance plug-in hybrid BMW i8, but has been treated to a bespoke exterior design with new body panels, new front and back and a glass roof. We have also been treated to some nice looking 20-inch Borbet GTX aluminum wheels and the concept even features a unique drone landing platform that is made up of 12,000 individually controlled LEDs that can also serve as an electronic message board. The DJI quadcopter can be sent to pick up the driver’s deliveries or just hover above the car to livestream the trip to all interested parties.

Inside the fancy Rinspeed designers have also decided to get rid of the standard i8 cabin layout and come up with their own take on the dashboard – which features two curved 21.5-inch Ultra HD widescreen monitors, as well as a folding / retracting steering wheel that can disappear if the car is in full autonomous mode. The bespoke layout continues with the titanium pedals, ceramic trim, seats with the San Francisco skyline embroidery, a unique mechanical Patravi Traveltec clock from Carl F. Bucherer and a premium Harman infotainment system. Additionally, there are eight high-definition exterior cameras that help monitor the surroundings and assist the driver in detecting potential hazards – the latter is itself monitored by the gaze-tracking system which determines what he or she has seen to modify the warnings accordingly.
