The world’s largest luxury automaker has become the official vehicle partner of the 2015/2016 FIA Formula E Championship and to celebrate the deal has also premiered the new X5 xDrive40e rescue vehicle.
With the competition’s second season ready to start in Beijing on 17 October 2015, BMW will once more act as the official vehicle partner. The technologically advanced i8 hybrid sports car will again be the Safety Car for the races that only feature electrically-powered vehicles. The all-electric i3 city dweller will also be there as Medical Car, just like they both did in the first season of the new series. The new additions include a couple of BMW’s C evolution electric scooters and more importantly the BMW X5 xDrive40e plug-in hybrid.
“BMW i and Formula E make a great match, ” comments Jörg Reimann, Vice President BMW Brand Experience. “BMW has been involved in Formula E from the word go. The series got off to a highly successful start in its first year on the calendar, with its all-electric formula racing cars, tight street circuits running through the heart of major world cities and innovative ideas engaging fans. And this commitment has given the company a platform on which to press its claim as a leader in electric mobility.”
In case you forgot, the X5 xDrive40e plug in hybrid has under the hood a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, assisted by an electric motor and a 9 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Together they deliver a total output of 313 PS (230 kW) and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm) of torque. The sprint to 62 mph (100 km/h) is done in 6.8 seconds and it will top out at 210 km/h (130 mph). Fully electric range is of 19 miles – 31 kilometers.
