BMW’s M division, named the M GmbH, is celebrating 40 years since it was founded back in 1972 to facilitate the company’s racing program, which was quite successful in the 1960s and 1970s.
“A company is like a human being. As long as it goes in for sports, it is fit, well-trained, full of enthusiasm and performance”, said the BMW AG board member Sales, Robert A. Lutz, back in 1972.
The BMW M, which is currently known as the BMW M GmbH, was founded back in 1972 and it’s producing high performance engines and cars, along with automotive sports accessories. The M-badged vehicles include new aerodynamics, modified engines, suspension systems, transmissions and more, being tested and tuned at the Nurburgring in Germany.
According to the German based automaker, the first official M-badged car offered for sale was the M1, which was presented to the public at the Paris Motor Show back in 1978 and this was followed by the M535i one year later, which was actually a high performance version of the 5-Series, but the company’s first success actually came with the BMW 3.0 CSL.
After becoming a true brand worldwide, just like the AMG, the BMW Motorsport GmbH (M-Technik) deservers a big birthday cake, a bottle of champagne and a “Happy Birthday” song. Thank you, ///M!
