BMW’s 5 Series executive sedan had a great diesel performance version – the punchy M550d. Now thanks to Vision of Speed (VOS) it has become a true competitor for the petrol-fueled M5.
High-performance diesels have been a niche for a long time but they’re now starting to become more mainstream and not even the massive VW emissions scandal appears to be able to quench the appetite for such models. Niche or not, VOS has decided un update is in order for one of the most important models in this small but growing segment – the BMW M550d. Using a tri-turbo 3.0-liter six-cylinder to deliver an impressive 381 PS (280 kW) and 740 Nm (546 lb-ft) didn’t look enough so VOS dialed the power to a massive 450 PS (331 kW) and 800 Nm (591 lb-ft). And while the M550d can cost an arm and a leg, the Vision of Speed (VOS) improvements are a trifle 2,290 euros. If you’re the Scrooge and won’t pay that lump sum you can have the entry-level feature of custom downpipes going for €899 that bring an additional 15 PS (11 kW).
But naturally since you paid a fortune to have the BMW M550d deliver you fast on the Autobahn to all of your important meetings, you’ll want the full upgrade pack: 20-inch AEZ wheels with Michelin Pilot Super Sport 245/35 R20 front and 275/30 R20 rear tires at 2,490 for the full set, Brembo brakes for €2,695 and H&R performance springs to sit neatly closer to the ground by 35 mm for just €499. Removing the speed limiter will enable the M550d with VOS modifications to hit at least 186 mph (300 km/h).
