BMW has surprised everyone after it released full details for the much anticipated M Performance range, the M550d xDrive Sedan, M550d xDrive Touring, X5 M50d and X6 M50d.
According to the German based automaker, all the above mentioned BMW M Performance models are equipped with the newly developed 3.0 liter six-cylinder in-line diesel engine, which is developing a total output of 381 horsepower at 4.000 – 4.400 rpm and it has a peak torque of 740 Nm (546 lb-ft) available between 2.000 and 3.000 rpm. BMW says that maximum revs are 5.400 rpm and thanks to the three turbos, the throttle response is instantaneous.
Even if 381 horsepower available from 4.000 rpm on a diesel is very much like cooking your favorite meal everyday and putting it on the sealing so it could only be available if you climb the ladder, the torque figure, 740 Nm is impressive and considering the fact that it’s all available from 2.000 rpm, future owners of the model will be changing their seats quite a lot.
We’ve talked about the engine and now we must talk about the 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time, where in the BMW 550d xDrive Sedan takes 4.7 seconds, in the M550d xDrive Touring takes 4.9 seconds, in the X5 M50d is being done in 5.4 seconds while in the sportier X6 M50d it’s over in 5.3 seconds. The engine is mated to an eight-speed sports automatic transmission, which is sending power to all the wheels (xDrive), and the models are equipped with Auto start / stop, M-tuned dampers and springs, engine and transmission mounting and bodyshell mounting.
The cabin hasn’t been left aside on the above mentioned models either, and all of them are now coming with extra features like the M logo on the gearshift leaver, the Alcantara/Nappa leather, M sports seats in Black on the X5 and X6 or Alcantara/Cloth in Grey Shadow on the M550d with contract stitching and the M logo, M leather wrapped steering wheel with shift paddles, Brushed Aluminum Shadow or Aluminum Hexagon interior trims for the SUVs, BMW Individual roof liner in Anthracite and that’s about all.
The new BMW M Performance M550d Sedan and Touring, X5 M50d and X6 M50d will be officially presented to the public at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in March and sales are expected to start in May, for the M550d models, and in June, for the SUVs. German prices for the four models have been set at:
