The Bavarian brand is looking to put its green strategy front and center and has announced it will visit the New York International Auto Show in April with all of its iPerformance sub-brand plug-in hybrid models.
Of course, the most important new apparition in this green-mint iPerformance lineup arriving in the United States will be the 2018 530e. It’s a brother to the existing 330e, as it makes use of a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and electric motor for a total output of 248 horsepower (185 kilowatts) and 310 pound-feet (420 Newton-meters). In the 5 Series, the powertrain has been granted with a fully electric range of 15 miles compared to the 14 miles in the 330e. The 530e iPerformance will set US buyers back $51,400 or $53,700 with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive when it arrives at dealerships this spring.
The 740e xDrive and X5 xDrive40e iPerformance are also making an appearance at the Big Apple show, packing the same combination of turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder and electric motor. The 7 Series version has 322 hp (240 kW) and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque, whereas the X5 comes with 308 hp (230 kW) and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm) of torque – and both can travel up to 14 miles on electricity alone. The iPerformance models join BMW’s i lineup consisting of the fully electric or plug in hybrid range extender i3 as well as the performance flagship i8.
