The German automaker has prepared yet another limited series – the i8 Protonic Dark Silver Edition – in time for the Paris Motor Show starting early October.
Even though the standard i8 plug in hybrid still looks as if coming from the latest sci-fi picture, the Germans think when you’re trying to sell a $100,000-plus car it’s best to stay on your toes in order not to fall into the old and common abyss. In case people were not that interested in the standard edition anymore, BMW started to come up with the regular marketing ploy – limited series. We first saw the Protonic Red Edition, seen for the first time this spring during the Geneva Motor Show and now it’s time to have a follow up in the form of the Protonic Dark Silver Edition, slated for release in front of the worldwide audience later on during the Paris Motor Show.
The Dark Silver Edition also comes with a highly reflective ‘Protonic’ paint finish – Protonic Blue is taken directly from the standard color chart – both Protonic finishes are highlighting the complex surfacing of the i8’s bodywork, and they are also very bright. BMW claims owners can “tailor their car entirely to their own vision.” It’s not subject to any change the powertrain though – mid-mounted, 1.5-liter, turbocharged three-cylinder engine snatched from the Mini Cooper provides 228 horsepower (170 kilowatts), and will go to unleash – alongside the front-mounted electric motors’ 129 horsepower (96 kilowatts), a total of 357 horsepower (266 kilowatts).
