BMW unveils the 2 Series Coupe model – starts at $33,025 image

German premium carmaker BMW has just officially unveiled the new BMW 2 Series Coupe model, a vehicle that, as expected, will replace the current 1 Series Coupe; therefore no more 1 Series Coupefolks – say hello to the new 2-Series Coupe.

Compared to the actual (actually … old now) 1 Series, the new 2 Series Coupe comes with a new “air”, is more eye-catching, a little bit longer (72 millimetres longer than the outgoing BMW 1 Series Coupe for a total of 4,432 millimetres in length), wider (+26 millimetres for a total of 1,774 millimetres) and better equipped. It also has a 30-millimetre longer wheelbase (for a total of 2,690 millimetres) and wider tracks (front: 1,521 millimetres, +41 millimetres; rear: 1,556 millimetres, +43 millimetres). Inside you have more space and 20 litres of extra boot capacity – for a total of 390 litres.

The new car will be sown to the public during the 2014 Detroit Motor Show in January and will hit the U.S market in the spring starting at $33,025 for the 228i and $44,025 for the M235i, including $925 destination and handling. In Europe the entry-level 220i coupe will be available from 25,168 Euro, 27,310 Euro for the 220d and 36,764 Euro for the top of the line M235i.

2-Series Engines
In the U.S. the 2-Series Coupe model will be available with two petrol units. The entry level 22i Coupe will be powered by a four-pot inline unit with TwinPower Turbo technology (twin-scroll turbochargers, High Precision Direct Injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve timing, Double-Vanos ). The engine will have a total output of 135 kW/184 hp at 5,000 – 6,250 rpm and 270 Nm / 199 lb-ft at 1,250 – 4,500 rpm. The 2014 BMW 220i Coupe will hit a top speed of 235 km/h / 146 mph and will hit 100 km/h in 7 seconds. Average fuel consumption*: 6.1 – 6.3 litres (5.7 – 6.0 litres) per 100 kilometres / 46.3 – 44.8 (49.6 – 47.1) mpg imp.

The top of the line M235i Coupe model will receive a six-cylinder in-line petrol engine with M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology that will have a total output of 240 kW/326 hp at 5,800 – 6,000 rpm. It will hit 100km/h in 5.0 seconds (4.8 seconds with automatic transmision) and a top speed of 250 km/h or 155mph. BMW says the M235i Coupe will burn 8.1 litres (7.6 litres) per 100 kilometres; that’s’ 34.9 (37.2) mpg imp.

In Europe, BMW will offer three more diesel units – the basic diesel model will be the 105 kW/143 hp 218d Coupe, while the top of the line diesel model will offer 160 kW/218 hp at 4,400 rpm (the 225d Coupe). Of course the will be a “middle” model – the 220d Coupe.

When will hit the market later in the spring, the new 2 Series will be available in a choice of two non-metallic and 10 metallic shades. The M Sport Package will include a specific color – the Estoril Blue metallic.

Probably the most important part is that will get more space. BMW says the front / back passengers will get +21 millimetres legroom. The Control Display comes in 6.5 or 8.8-inch form, while the Controller on the center console has a touch-sensitive surface which allows the driver to input characters. You have three colors to choose for your cloth seats but of course Dakota leather trim is available.
