The German automaker has seemingly thrown its serious evolutionist theory out the Concept Lawn of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance with the official unwrapping of the Z4 Concept – set to take place there on Sunday, August 20.
Of course, we’re getting an official online preview, along with interesting details to entice us to the upcoming arrival of the series model. “The BMW Concept Z4 expresses the new BMW design language from all perspectives and in all details,” says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. “From the dynamic- looking front to the striking flanks to the clean-cut tail end: a few lines and the subtle interplay between surfaces are enough to generate a sense of power and emotion.” We’re actually pretty sure the first time we saw this new design language from BMW was back when the automaker introduced the 8 Series Concept. In addition, while BMW explains the crew took inspiration from roadsters of the past for the new Concept, the Z4 has not a single retro element visible.
More so, we can see the reinterpretation of some of the company’s iconic cues – the headlights feature a vertical instead of horizontal arrangement and the kidney grille bars have been ditched for mesh elements. The shark-face makes another apparition, with a firm look into the future – there’s a V-shaped piece of carbon fiber in the center section and there are long vents on the hood for ventilation and styling purposes. The idea of having a gill behind each wheel as seen on the 7 and 5 Series is taken up, with design lines stemming from it. The rear is just as pleasing as the front – with huge vents in the bumper and stylish, elongated taillights.
Moving inside, we can see BMW has taken an interesting two-tone approach – the driver’s side is singled out via the entirely black appearance, save for some metallic trim and red paddle shifters. A digital instrument cluster and a large infotainment display are common now, with the concept’s passenger side dressed up in light brown leather to complement the Energetic Orange Frozen exterior shade. No powertrain details have been advanced for the Z4 Concept, so chances are this is just a static design study. We do know the series model is set to share the engines and gearboxes with the reincarnated Toyota Supra.
