Car for 5-10 year young drivers currently in development image

No, it’s not yet April 1 so this is not an April Fools’ Day joke. The Young Driver Motor Cars Limited is developing this purpose built vehicle for 5-10 year olds for real.

This is a unit of Young Driver, the largest provider of pre-17 driving lessons in Great Britain. And they even have a real car designer – Chris Johnson – leading the body styling – which according to the company should come with a contemporary design, as we can see from the first drawing. The model will be tailored specifically to children aged five to 10 and the vehicle will be motivated by dual electric motors that will ensure a top speed of 10 mph (16 km/h). It will even have front and rear disc brakes and will come complete with an independent suspension. It will be produced in right- and left-hand drive configurations and comes with automatic collision mitigation and emergency braking functions to safely stop the vehicle in case an obstacle is detected and a collision becomes imminent.

And parents will remain in control because it will also be provided with a remote control unit. The model will be first presented during the 2016 Gadget Show Live (March 31 – April 3) taking place at the National Exhibition Center (NEC) in Birmingham, United Kingdom. Kids will be allowed to take four working chassis out for a spin – and their input will provide valuable information to be used later on in the development phase. The finished product should be ready for May this year and it will become available at select Young Driver venues in the UK.
