Car registrations up 9.3% in the EU in 2015, VW’s market share drops image

Passenger car registrations showed a 9.3 percent increase in Europe throughout last year, with Volkswagen AG’s market share in the region falling for the first time since 2007, according to the latest report of the European Automobile Manufacturers Association.

The latest data gathered by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association shows that in 2015, new passenger car registrations increased by +9.3 percent, totaling 13,713,526 units. Nevertheless, this result is barely overpassing the levels registered in 2010, immediately after the economic crisis. In other words, the trend is positive but, in absolute terms, volumes remain low, the Association mentioned in the report. Looking at the five EU major markets, Spain (+20.9%) and Italy (+15.8%) had the strongest growth in demand during the year, followed by France (+6.8%), the UK (+6.3%) and Germany (+5.6%), which posted a robust performance in 2015.

As for the month of December 2015, the EU passenger car market posted a solid 16.6 percent uplift, amounting to 1,109,927 vehicles and marking the 28th consecutive month of growth. This is the highest percentage increase since the beginning of this positive trend. All major passenger car markets ended 2015 on an ascending slope, contributing significantly to the full-year positive result. Spain (+20.7%), Italy (+18.7%) and France (+12.5%) posted double-digit percentage gains during the month, followed by the UK (+8.4%) and Germany (+7.7%), which also performed better than in December 2014.

The Volkswagen Group accounted for 3,183,224 registrations, out of which 1,558,463 for its namesake brand, marking a 6.3 percent annual increase. However, Group’s market share at the end of the year was 24.8 percent in the region compared with 25.5 percent in 2014.
