The new Corvette Z06 pace for Indianapolis 500 has been unveiled recently by the North American based automaker Chevrolet.

“It’s great to have Jeff Gordon serve as this year’s pace car driver. He is a true champion who has earned the respect and admiration of competitors and race fans alike. It will be very special to have Jeff lead the Indy 500 field to the green flag, behind the wheel of the most powerful and capable production car ever from Chevrolet – on a day he’ll also be competing in the Coca Cola 600 NASCAR race at Charlotte Motor Speedway”, said the U.S. Chevrolet vice president of performance vehicles and motorsports, Jim Campbell.

The Chevrolet Corvette Z06 pace car for Indy 500 is going to be driven by Jeff Gordon. The model in question has received the Arctic White exterior finish with strobe lights and the Indy graphics while the most important part of it is found under its hood. Here, the 6.2 liter V8 supercharged engine is resting. This is capable of producing no less than 650 HP (485 kW) and a peak torque of 881 Nm (650 lb-ft). The unit is connected to a 7-speed manual transmission and this is allowing the pace car to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 3.2 seconds. With the 8-speed automatic gearbox, the model needs 2.95 seconds to reach 60 mph (96 km/h). The braking from 60 mph to 0 is made in 99.6 feet.

Corvettes have been a lifelong passion for me….but I see this latest generation as missing something now the era of Hybrid Supercars is upon us. For its power and performance for the price it is mindblowing…..there aren`t many cars to compete with it….but its track results leave me baffled. It is lighter, more powerful and better lateral grip than the Nissan GTR, yet the GTR beats it round the circuit by over 2 seconds!!! As Randy Pobst said, the ZO6 was a real handful to drive on the edge, whist the GTR was a walk in the park! How the heck can that be happening? I think losing the rear Ferrari style round lights has something to do with it! #:)
