Chevrolet releases the Cruze Hatch online just prior to NAIAS public reveal image

Set to receive its worldwide public reveal during the North American International Auto Show taking place next week in Detroit, Chevrolet has decided to first reveal online its new Cruze hatchback.

The 2017 Cruze Hatchback features the same big wheelbase as the sedan sibling but has been tailored with a new roof and a unique rear-end structure complete with wraparound taillights and a liftgate integrated spoiler. The main change with the hatchback comes when speaking of the cargo space, which is of 18.5 cubic feet (524 liters) behind the rear shelf and going up to 42 cubic feet (1,189 liters) when all rear seats are folded. The modifications to the design allow Chevy to look to both customers looking for a sportier, youthful model as well as those that emphasize practicality. The Cruze Sedan is available in the US in L, LS, LT and Premier trim and the Cruze Hatchback will sport in fall 2016 when it hits dealerships the LT and Premier flavors, while the RS package is also optionally available.

The hatch uses the same powertrain as the sedan brethren, namely a turbocharged 1.4-liter inline-four mill delivering 153 horsepower (113 kW) at 5,600 rpm and 177 pound-feet (240 Nm) of torque from 2,000 rpm – mated to a standard six-speed manual or optional six speed auto. Pricing and full technical details – including performance figures – have not been revealed yet but we do know the Hatchback will come with the MyLink infotainment system complete with 4G LTE with Wi-Fi hotspot and standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Safety is also well addressed: Teen Driver feature, Lane Keep Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Side Blind Zone Alert and Rear Park Assist. Other notable highlights include the halogen projector-beam headlamps with LED lighting, a heated steering wheel, heated front and rear seats or the Athens leather-appointed seating surfaces with true French seams.
