We’ve seen this idea have great success in Europe – from no frills models like Dacia’s Sandero Stepway to the Volkswagen Cross up! – and now Chevrolet is doing it for the urban-dwelling Americans.
Say hello to the new Spark Activ – which has all-round black plastic body cladding and added ride height that facilitates third degree encounters in the urban jungle. The Spark Activ comes with all the traditional crossover styling cues – black plastic for the front and rear bumpers, rocker panels, and wheel wells, but there are also stylish touches such as the silver faux-metal brush guards front and back, as well on the sides. Larger fog lamps are housed into body-color housings, a set of roof bars adorn the top and a silver plate with “Activ” is set into the grille. The model also has 15-inch alloy wheels, while the suspension has been lifted 0.4 inches (10 millimeters).
The cabin gains black leatherette upholstery, and the standard equipment spreadsheet reads things like a Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system with a seven-inch touchscreen, complete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality. There are also perks such as a rear-view camera, satellite radio, 4G hotspot, air conditioning, cruise control, and keyless entry – all standard. The same 1.4-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine mated to a five-speed manual gearbox or a continuously variable automatic is on point. Price kick off at $16,945 for the manual and $18,045 for the automatic.
