The North American based automotive giant General Motors will offer a bi-fuel version of the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado HD and 2015 GM Sierra HD.
GM has announced its plans to offer a compressed natural gas option of the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado HD and 2015 GM Sierra HD, during the Green Fleet Conference & Expo this week. The bi-fuel option will only become available on the 2500HD and 3500HD versions, in all cab sized and with either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.
“With these new vehicles, General Motors offers the most comprehensive lineup of manufacturer-engineered, validated and warranted CNG vehicles, helping fleet managers manage their budget and reduce their carbon footprint. Natural gas is less costly at the pump and significantly reduces carbon dioxide emissions, compared to other liquid fuels “, said the GM Fleet and Commercial Sales VP, Ed Peper.
In order to cope with the CNG, the 6.0 liter V8 engines in the vehicles mentioned above have been updated with special hardened valves and valve seats, so they can handle both fuels. The heavy duty pickups get separate tanks for the two fuels and they allow the driver to select between fuels. If the CNG tank is empty, the system switches to the other fuel. The total driving range with both fuels stands at 650 miles.
