General Motors China has revealed for the world’s largest auto market the new generation GL8 multi-purpose vehicle, expected to reach dealerships before the start of 2017.
The upscale MPV has reached its third generation and comes with a posher exterior appearance that deploys the latest advancement of the Buick design language. It has the same generous wheelbase as its predecessor – 121.5 inches (3, 088 mm) – apparently the best in class, according to the automaker. But now the model comes with shorter front and rear overhangs, for a more compact appearance. Buick has not yet released all the details about the GL8, but said it would have room for up to seven people and come with updated engines and the newest technologies.
Rumors put the new model using just two trim levels: the entry-level ES and the flagship Avenir – as per the company’s recent decision to have all top of the line models receive the Avenir moniker thanks to the creation of the namesake sub-brand. Power is reportedly provided via a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine packing 253 hp (189 kW) and comes with an independent rear suspension to increase comfort. The all-new GL8 is expected to go on sale in China before the end of the year, and could receive the official premiere during the Guangzhou Auto Show in the second half of November.
