Here’s something we haven’t seen in a while – a Chinese automaker blatantly copying a global carmaker – so let’s meet and greet Jinbei new Diazi.
If it looks familiar, it’s because it is. While imitation is always the most sincere form of flattery, this time around Acura should have a problem (read litigation) with the new copycat – the MDX was never a looker, but it now makes it look even worse. Jinbei is part of Brilliance’s portfolio, a company that has become huge thanks in part to its association into a joint venture in the People’s Republic with German luxury brand BMW. As far as we can tell from the design, this looks like an unsuccessful clone of the pre-update MDX, and because blatant obvious is never enough, even the official pictures released by the Chinese brand depict the Diazi in a burgundy shade very close to the one also used by Acura for its midsize luxury SUV.
The association is so powerful one might even mistake the one for the other, with the Diazi only having different bumpers, lighting cluster graphics or ally wheel styling. The Chinese haven’t been able to also copy the internals. Local media reports the Diazi will have under the hood a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 150 hp or a 1.8-liter turbo with 160 hp. Which is nowhere near the MDX’s 3.5-liter V6 engine packing 290 hp. The knockoff will also have a six speed manual and it’s still unknown if all wheel drive will even be available.
