Ram Truck announced it will manufacture a new large van to be sold in North America from the third quarter of 2013.
The 2014 Ram ProMaster, joins the smaller Ram C/V, competing with other full-size commercial vans, such as Ford Transit and the Chevrolet Express.
“The Ram ProMaster further strengthens our commercial lineup, offering a full line of work trucks and vans,” said Fred Diaz, President and CEO – Ram Truck Brand and Chrysler de Mexico, Chrysler Group LLC. “As the Ram Truck Brand continues to gain share and grow sales in the retail truck market, we will be just as aggressive in our goal to be a commercial truck market leader.”
The Ram ProMaster is based on the successful Fiat Ducato and it will be significantly redesigned with the well-known Ram Truck styling cues, offering powertrains and features especially for the North American customers. Ram Truck is expected to offer the ProMaster in passenger, cargo, chassis-cab and cutaway guises.
The company did not offer details about the engine sizes, but overseas the Ducato is offered with a number of small, turbo-diesel four-cylinders, ranging from 1.9 to 3.0-liters. As the largest option is 175 hp and offers 294 lb-ft of torque, it is expected that ProMaster will be a little more powerful.
