A 1955 Mercedes-Benz, originally owned by famous actor Clark Gable, was sold at an auction for $1.85 million.
Oklahoma City auto dealer Bob Howard was the one to sell the silver Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing Coupe, with a beautiful red interior design. The vehicle was kept for more than 10 years in the automaker’s Oklahoma City showroom at 1225 N Broadway and it was sold at the 2013 Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Arizona to a couple from Orange County, California.
“Everybody loved the car. It was a piece of art,” he said, adding: “We’re glad to get it in somebody’s hands where other people can enjoy it,” said auto dealer Bob Howard.
Gable purchased the extremely rare car from a Mercedes-Benz dealership in Beverly Hills. After the actor died has changed several owners and in 1989 it underwent a $200,000 restoration. In 2006 it appeared in the May/June issue. Since then, the car has only been driven occasionally by Howard and his staff, to ‘exercise it.’
“A little scratch can devalue it by a couple hundred thousand (dollars), so we were very careful about that,” he said.
