German tire manufacturer and auto parts provider Continental started the construction of a new tire plant in the eastern Chinese city of Hefei.
The new facility will be put into operation in December next year and will mainly manufacture tires for mountain bikes and racing bikes. According to Constantin Batsch, head of Continental’s Two Wheel Tyre business group, the products will be destined for the Chinese market and other Asian countries and regions.
The new plant will have a production capacity of 1.7 million pieces of bike tires a year in its early stages. The executive didn’t give any details on the amount of investment, China Daily reported.
The facility will add to Continental’s passenger car tire factory in Hefei, inaugurated in May this year with an investment of €185 million ($240 million). The unit can manufacture 4 million pieces of tires a year in its early stages but will eventually have an annual output of 16 million tires.
