Shenzhen BYD Daimler New Technology, the joint venture between Chinese automaker BYD and Daimler, today announced that the design concept of the planned electric vehicle will make its first public appearance at the Auto China 2012 show in Beijing.
The 50:50 R&D joint venture plans to launch a fully electric vehicle in 2013 for the Chinese market and the concept car that will be showcased in April 2012 in Beijing will give visitors a first taste of what Daimler and BYD are preparing. The two companies will also reveal the new brand’s identity, including brand name, logo and positioning, as well as the concept car’s exterior and interior design.
The Shenzhen-based joint venture has also started work on the production model of the car, with the first testing prototypes to be running by springtime next year. The joint venture will use BYD’s know-how in battery technology and e-drive systems and Daimler’s experience in electric vehicle architecture and safety.
Production of the new generation of compact to mid-size electric vehicles in Shenzhen will be closely accompanied by Daimler’s quality management experts and will follow Daimler’s standardised production system for passenger cars. The two companies also announced today that supplier sourcing for the new vehicle is nearly completed, with both partners having decided to sign a number of China-based international and local suppliers.
